The Clifton Center's board is committed to maintaining the integrity of this historic
landmark - one of the finest examples of Mediterranean architecture in our city. Designed
by Thomas Nolan, the building is on the National Register of Historic Places. We are half
way to completing this long-term restoration project estimated to cost $1.3 million. Over
$600,000 has been dedicated to this effort since 1992 including:
- Restoration of the 500-seat auditorium
- Renovation of a former cafeteria into a lovely reception hall for 250-500 people
- Re-design of other first floor rooms for public use
- Infrastructure improvements such as roofing, masonry repair, electrical systems, walkways and parking
- Soffit and exterior entry restoration
The Clifton Center's Facilities Committee has developed a multi-staged plan to make the
remaining second and third floors of the building more accessible and energy efficient
and to complete the exterior restoration. Elements of this renovation include:
- Addition of an elevator and new lobby on east side of building
- Completion of entries renovation
- New HVAC units for eight large workshop/classrooms
- Window replacement for the eight workshop/classrooms
Because of increased usage by the public, all these improvements are very important.
Adding an elevator was crucial to the use of this building because every entry is between
floors; one must go up or down stairs to access any of our popular gathering spaces.
The old metal frame windows are beyond repair and must be replaced before new heating
and air conditioning systems will improve comfort and efficiency.
We are working with architects from Nolan & Nolan, Inc., whose founder was the building's
designer. Funds have been secured from all over the community from entities including
C.E.&S., Community Foundation of Louisville's Historic Preservation Fund, Cralle,
Gardner, Gheens, Hannah, Horn, Owsley Brown Frazier Family, Paradis Family, Al J. Schneider, Stegner Family Fund
and the Sutherland Foundations, Bank One, Bank of Louisville, Brown-Forman, Fifth Third
Bank, Kroger, Stockyards Bank, Vencor, the Kentucky Colonels, the City of Louisville and Jefferson County.
Additional materials on the mission and impact of the Clifton Center are available,
including the beneficiaries of our mission, a board list, our IRS Tax Exempt Designation
letter, last year's audit and an outline of the total campaign.
